Job Shadow ReportFor my first job shadow I went to Caldwell Impact Bank and followed Kelsey Weems for the day. When I was there I got to see all areas of the bank and learned what her job entailed. Although there is some discretion when it comes to bank records, I was able to go inside the vault as well as look at bank statements to see withdrawals and deposits. I was fortunate enough to learn about a checkbook register and how to use it. I think Kelsey was more excited than me, but informed me greatly on what effects keeping track of your purchases will do for you when you are unsure about a deposit to a company. I chose to go to the bank because the bank is a great place to work while attending college. This does in fact match up with my career matchmaker, so I could also see myself making a living as a banker. I did not think at all I would learn the things I did before going to the bank, but I am more than satisfied with the information that I left with and feel it gave me a good aspect to what the bank life involves and think I would enjoy working in a place like a bank.
I went to Kanokla Networks for my second job shadow, I shadowed Sam Futhey and Jamie York in graphic design, followed by Lacey Turek and Carla Davis in accounting. Although these are two different jobs, I picked KanOkla because I wanted to see a whole business in action. While visiting the graphic design crew, I learned a lot about the different things they need to do to help promote the community businesses. In accounting, I realized how everything that happens in a business goes back to the accounting department to make sure the budget allows them to do the tasks that the face to face workers do. The accountant of the business is in charge of keeping the credits and debits balance. Visiting both of these places showed me that I want both of those things, numbers and design, so why not marketing? I was unable to visit the marketing department at Kanokla but I know now it is something that interests me a lot. Both of the departments that I shadowed did match my career matchmaker and I do think I am taking steps in the right direction. |
Career ReportI have contemplated for a long time about what I wanted to be when I grow up. I have always known that in school my strong suit was math. This was always the class that I didn't worry about and looked forward to. Looking at the jobs that I was given on career cruising, my matchmaker profile gave me several jobs in the business field. I really wasn’t interested in those jobs, but it did start me thinking about a business degree. I have an aunt that works in a big accounting firm in Tennessee and crunches number. Her job allows her to relocate to big cities. After exploring several options, I have recently decided that going into the business field allows options many different job aspects and use many different skills such as math, and forcing me to step out of my comfort zone.
After some research, I now know that to get my bachelors degree in Business I need four years of college after of high school. While in college, I would also like to take the appropriate courses to get a minor in management. I have looked at a few places close to home such as Emporia State University. Their scholarships for business majors requires your GPA and ACT scores to find how much scholarship are available. Before factoring in the amount of scholarships, it would be about $11,000 a year. Assuming that I stay in Caldwell with a general business degree I could get a job many places and make roughly about $58,000 per year. Of course cost of living in a town the size of Caldwell is much lower than if one was in a big city. The cost of living in Los Angeles looks very scary. However, because of the cost of living being so high one would make much more than living in a small town. The average amount per year in LA is about $62,000. I like the idea of being able to relocate to a bigger city, but think I would have a hard time making the adjustment of small town living to a big city life. |
